Deep Cleaning with CleanHome

Spring Cleaning? Hours of deep cleaning once a week? Not with CleanHome!

Why? Because after being in the house all winter, everyone wants to be outside enjoying the sun and fresh air and warming temperatures, and who wants to spend an entire day once a week, washing walls and scrubbing floors, and dusting the whole house?

Who wants to be stuck at home in dust and up to their elbows in rags and wash clothes? Not me!!

If you’ve been in the stores in the post valentine, pre easter season and seen the spring ad campaigns coming out, you’ll notice all the attention paid to “Spring Cleaning” supplies. Don’t let these ad campaigns pressure you or make you feel guilty!

Now I’ll admit that once upon a time a new mop and broom in April has in fact encouraged me to clean, but it never lasted for long, and honestly our homes needs a good clean sweep more often then once a year!

If you've been avoiding this kind of cleaning, don’t feel guilty about it…it doesn’t make you a bad person. It makes you human! I can think of 20 different things I’d rather do than pull out the stove!

I once didn’t think of cleaning under the couch, or pulling out the stove and fridge. I once had science experiments growing in the fridge and no room on grocery day to put the new food in there! I’ve thrown my share of molded food storage containers! I still do on occasion if I get behind in my CleanHome Plan and forget to clean the fridge for a week. It happens to everyone, we're not perfect, so don't fret.

How did I solve this? Well, on the day I chose to clean my kitchen, I take 10 minutes and sweep through the fridge and use any leftovers for a “pot luck” leftover supper night once a week.

I avoid needing scrub to clean my oven with chemicals and/or elbow grease for an hour by using a tinfoil large flat pan from the dollar store on the bottom of the oven inside, and just replace it once a month or so, depending on how soiled it gets. I try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, but as a busy mom of two, the dollar is worth the saving of my time and energy, and the tinfoil is recyclable.

I made a task list for myself I do once a month, on the last week of the month for each room I am working on that week.

It looks like this:
Out of Sight, Out of Mind Tasks.

Kitchen: Pull out fridge & stove to sweep and mop under/behind. Wipe cupboards and appliances down well ( the kids can help with this!) This job won't be as big if you wipe everytime you spill something. ( stringing cooking habits)

Living Room: Vacuum and Sweep under the couch.

Bedrooms: Do a thorough Sweep under the beds

Laundry Room: Check behind dryer for missing socks etc, clean lint trap well, wipe down appliances.

These tasks are no fun but in an extra 10 minutes in those rooms, they are done and I don’t think about them for another 3 weeks. I’m not so fussy that I need to do this every week, or every two weeks, and I find in our home that every 4th week is sufficient.

So, think about what you need to do in this deep cleaning area, and how often you'll need to do it, and add this to your CleanHome routine if you’re unhappy with the thought of hard cleaning days to solve these problem areas.
